Evan Craig is creating important dialogues about racial justice at Austin High School.
Craig has been the president of the Black Student Alliance at Austin High School for three consecutive years and is currently treasurer of the Student Council. He was also named the 2022 African American Senior Scholar, with the highest GPA of all Black students at Austin High School.
But until his senior year, Craig was a quiet leader. He found his voice with the help of his family in the time they spent together at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Theyre very supportive, they want me to show the best sides of myself instead of holding it in, Craig said. Being together as a family helped me to see that I have a gift for helping people and volunteering my time to other people.
Craig had always been inspired by his sisters ability to freely speak her mind and by his great-grandfathers stories about his past.
He was a pastor at a church on the east side, and he talks about how he was always happy to go to church every day because he was able to guide people and see the community he lived in all come together, Craig said.
However, Craig said he doesnt see himself as an activist in the traditional sense. He is more focused on connecting people and creating judgment-free community spaces.
For Black History Month, Craig organized several discussions among students at Austin High about historical and contemporary issues for Black and African American Austinites. These discussions helped him realize that though there has been progress in the Austin community, there is still more work to be done together.
In all of Austin, we have different communities, Craig said. But if we work as one, we can solve the problems that we have.
Sean Gallagher, Craigs AV Production teacher at Austin High, said he is optimistic about a future with thoughtful and kind leaders like Craig.
Evan believes in working hard and cooperating with others in order to make improvements both in systems and in community awareness, Gallagher said. I am thankful for students like Evan Craig because I genuinely believe in his ability to work for positive and ethical change in the world.
Craig aspires to be a professor and is set to pursue African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas in Austin this fall.

Craig ha sido el presidente de la Alianza de Estudiantes Negros en la Escuela Preparatoria Austin durante tres a簽os consecutivos y actualmente es el tesorero del consejo estudiantil. Tambi矇n fue nombrado como el alumno afroamericano de 12.o grado de 2022 con el promedio m獺s alto de todos los estudiantes afroamericanos de la Escuela Preparatoria Austin.
Pero hasta su 繳ltimo a簽o, Craig fue in l穩der tranquilo. Encontr籀 su voz con la ayuda de su familia durante el tiempo que pasaron juntos en casa durante la pandemia de COVID-19.
"Me apoyan mucho, quieren que demuestre lo mejor de m穩 en vez de guard獺rmelo, dijo Craig. Estar reunidos en familia me ayud籀 a ver que tengo un don para ayudar a otras personas y para brindar mi tiempo como voluntario para otras personas.
Craig siempre se vio inspirado por la habilidad de su hermana de decir libremente lo que piensa y por las historias de su bisabuelo sobre su pasado.
"Era pastor en una iglesia en el lado este, y habla de c籀mo siempre estaba feliz de ir a la iglesia todos los d穩as porque pod穩a guiar a las personas y ver como se un穩a la comunidad en la que viv穩a, dijo Craig.
Sin embargo, Craig dijo que no se ve a s穩 mismo como un activista en el sentido tradicional. Se enfoca m獺s en conectar a la gente y en crear espacios comunitarios sin juicios.
Para el Mes de la Historia Negra, Craig organiz籀 varias conversaciones entre los estudiantes en la Preparatoria Austin sobre temas hist籀ricos y contempor獺neos para los ciudadanos negros y afroamericanos de Austin. Estas conversaciones le ayudaron a darse cuenta que aunque ha habido progreso en la comunidad de Austin, a繳n hay m獺s trabajo para realizar juntos.
"En todo Austin, tenemos distintas comunidades, dijo Craig. Pero si trabajamos todos juntos, podemos resolver los problemas que tenemos.
Sean Gallagher, el maestro de producci籀n AV de Craig, dijo que es optimista sobre un futuro con l穩deres amables y considerados como Craig.
"Evan cree en trabajar arduamente y cooperar con otros para realizar las mejoras tanto en los sistemas como en la concientizaci籀n comunitaria, dijo Gallagher. Estoy agradecido por los estudiantes como Evan Craig porque creo genuinamente en su capacidad para trabajar hacia cambios positivos y 矇ticos en el mundo.
