AUSTIN, TX--This Friday, students at Andrews Elementary School will practice their reading skills with members of the U.S. military. Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina will read with kindergarten students over Skype as part of the school's Read Across America celebration. Others participating include a small-business owner and a music educator, both from south Texas.
Read Across America is the signature program of the National Education Association. Now in its 16th year, the year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships and reading resources.
Representatives of the Austin Police Department, the Austin Public Library, The University of Texas at Austin School of Information, AmeriCorps College Forward, and the ACE program will also join students for the reading.
